Jah knocked on Nivea’s door and waited. It was late Sunday night, and he was returning Jayda. He would have kept her longer, but he had to work in the morning, and his aunt had something to do although she offered to watch all of three of his children the rest of the week. He figured he needed to establish some understanding and expectations first anyway.

Nivea answered the door. When she saw a sleeping Jayda in Jah’s arms she smiled. She opened the door wider and stepped aside for Jah to come in.

“Naw, you just take her from me,” he insisted.

“She might wake up,” Nivea said. “You can just take her to her room and put her in bed. I’ll do the rest.”

“She got a pullup on,” he informed her as he stepped inside.

“Did she have any accidents?” Nivea closed the door and locked it. She got in front of Jah to lead him to Jayda’s bedroom.

“Naw, she was straight. Told us when she needed to go and er’thing.”

Nivea waited until after Jah placed her in her little toddler bed, to ask, “So how did she do?”

“She wasn’t really no problem. I figure long as Ja-Ja and Genni around, she cool. But that’s why I brought her over here so late. They done got attached and woulda had a fit to see her leavin’ and vice versa.”

Nivea stated earnestly, “Well that’s good. And yeah, she always does well around other kids. She’s not a fan of adults though.”

Jah headed out of Jayda’s room and walked back to the living room. “Where ol’ boy at?”

Nivea shrugged. “I been stop trying to keep up with him. He comes and goes.”

“How baby girl do around him?” Jah asked.

“She’s used to him. I think she deal with him because she sees her older brothers interacting with him.”

“Ay, I can’t tell you how you should be livin’ yo’ life, but I’ma need my girl whenever he come around especially when he on some fuck shit.”

“Jah, don’t be trying to take my baby away from me.”

“That ain’t what I’m tryna do at all. My thing is she mine and I’ma protect mine.”

Nivea nodded. “I understand.”

“So how we gon do this?”

“When I can get her and shit like that.”

Nivea shrugged. “I guess you can get her every other weekend.”

Jah shook his head. “That ain’t enough.”

“Well what do you suggest?”

Jah laughed. “You don’t want what I suggest. Shit. I suggest she live with me. Period.”

“Jazmin doesn’t go to work anymore, right?”

“She work from home the majority of the time.”

“You sure she’d want to take on an extra toddler like that? They can be a handful.”

Jah eyed her trying to figure out just how messy she was trying to be. He stepped out on her porch, but before he stepped down, he said carefully in an even tone, “I don’t know what’cho sneaky ass up to. Ion’een know how yo’ ass got a hold of that picture way down there in Jewel City, but’chu knew what the fuck you was doing when you showed that dumb ass shit to me.
